SENIOR REMINDERS
SENIOR DITCH DAY: There is no such thing!  The rumors fly that the Monday after prom is senior ditch day.  This is only a rumor and not supported by the school.  Unexcused absences result in zeros for that day’s work as well as consequences for skipping school.  Do not put yourself in this situation.

SENIOR SPIRIT WEEK: This week is a spirit week only for seniors.  The days will be as follows and must always be school appropriate:
5/21 Monday: Career Day – Dress as you would for your future career choice
5/22 Tuesday: Throwback Tuesday – Dress as your past Kindergarten self
5/23 Wednesday: “What did you say, eh?” Day - Dress as your future senior citizen self
5/24 Thursday: College Day – Dress in your college gear
5/25 Friday: Aloha Day – Dress in your aloha wear as we say “aloha – goodbye”

SENIOR FINALS: School will be on a regular schedule both days, Thursday, May 24th and Friday, May 25th.

COMMENCEMENT ADMISSION TICKETS:  All tickets have been distributed and we have some families in need of additional tickets.  If your family does not need all ten tickets, please turn the extras in to the front office so they can be redistributed to families on the waitlist.

CAPS AND GOWNS: Have all been distributed.  All graduates are required to wear a cap and gown with the appropriate tassel. Mortarboards are to be worn straight and if you plan to toss your mortarboard, write your name on the inside.  No writing, decorations, or attachments of any kind are permitted on the mortarboard or the graduation gown except the tassel or school sanctioned collar and cords.

GRADUATION STATUS: To graduate this spring each student must have completed the required 24 credits in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Community College and other off campus course work must be completed by Friday, May 18th.  If you have questions about graduation status, please contact Mrs. Collins at 659-3000 or erin.collins@horizonclc.org.

ALL MATERIALS and UNIFORMS: Textbooks and other course materials, as well as band, choir, and athletic uniforms must be turned in by the end of the day Friday, May 25th.  Only seniors who have been cleared of these responsibilities will be allowed to participate in commencement.  You will be cleared if you returned all items or replaced or paid for the missing materials or uniforms.  Seniors with outstanding items will not be allowed to participate in commencement.

GRAD BASH: All participants signed up for Grad Bash, please review the information sent to you in Google Classroom.  As a reminder, the bus will leave Horizon Honors at 8:20 AM on Thursday, May 31, 2018 and return to Horizon Honors around 10-11:00 AM on Friday, June 1, 2018.  Pay careful attention to the dress code requirements for the event.

EVENTS ON TUESDAY, MAY 29th

SENIOR BRUNCH: The brunch will be held in the multipurpose room from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM.  Attire does not have to be in dress code, but must be school appropriate.  We encourage you to wear your college gear for some great photo opportunities at the event.  Please be sure your family has signed up to support making senior brunch a success.  See Mrs. Hensel, Senior Class Advisor, if you have questions.

COMMENCEMENT REHEARSAL: This rehearsal is MANDATORY.  Any senior who does not attend the rehearsal does not participate in the ceremonyThe rehearsal will be at Mountain Park Church (across the street) from 1:00 to 2:30 PM.  Distribution of honors cords, community service recognition cords, and NHS honor collars/stoles will occur at the rehearsal.  NHS collars/stoles must be returned at the end of the ceremony.  Attire does not have to be in dress code, but must be school appropriate.  Note: Choir rehearsal is at 4:00 PM and Band rehearsal is at 4:30 PM.

COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES:  Graduates must be in place in the waiting area by 5:00 PM.  The doors will open to ticket holding family and guests at 5 PM. Commencement is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.  Please note, in order to maintain the dignity of the ceremony, audience members are asked to refrain from bringing/using noisemaking devices of any kind.  Balloons are not allowed in the audience because they obstruct the view of others

PHOTOGRAPHY: Family and friends are welcome to take all the video and photos they wish during the ceremony.  For safety reasons, tripods or stands may not be set up in any aisles or walkways.  There will be a professional photographer taking pictures in the center aisle of each graduate as he or she receives their diploma and stands facing the audience moving the tassel over on the mortarboard.  These pictures will be available for purchase through the photographer’s website and that information will be in the commencement program.

ACCEPTABLE COMMENCEMENT ATTIRE:
  • Dark dress slacks, collared dress shirt (short or long sleeves), dark tie, dress socks, and dress shoes (no flip flops) OR dresses/blouses and skirts (not longer than the graduation gown) and dress shoes (no flip flops).
  • Purses, parcels, packages, cameras, cell phones, corsages, leis, sunglasses or extraneous items are NOT ALLOWED – leave them with your family.
  • Mortarboards are to be worn straight; style hair accordingly.  If you plan to toss your mortarboard, write your name on the inside.
  • No writing, decorations, or attachments of any kind are permitted on the mortarboard or the graduation gown except the tassel or school sanctioned collar and cords.

APPROPRIATE COMMENCEMENT BEHAVIOR:
  • Punctuality:  You must arrive by 5 PM in the waiting room fully dressed in cap and gown.  Graduates who are late for line up may not be part of the ceremony.
  • Conduct:  If a staff member at the check-in area determines that the graduate’s conduct, physical condition, and/or appearance are such that it could be disruptive to the ceremony, that student may not be a part of the ceremony.
  • Accountability:  Graduates who disturb the ceremony in any way will be removed from the ceremony immediately and WILL NOT receive a diploma with the rest of the graduates.

If you have any questions about any senior reminders, please feel free to contact Principal Shaheen at cynthia.shaheen@horizonclc.org or 480-659-3000
