The Power of Yet
Hi, my name is Mrs. Wallace, and I’m the academic advisor for grades 7-9.  My office is located in the College & Career Center, which can be found on the south side of the Media Center.  My colleague, Mrs. Collins, shares an office with me.  She is the school counselor for grades 10-12.  Often you will find us working with students on their emotional needs, academic needs, college needs or scheduling needs.  Each year we pick an endeavor on which to build our focus.  This year, as an offshoot of Mrs. Shaheen’s theme of “Grit”, we are focusing on the “Power of Yet” and fostering a growth mindset.  So, what exactly does that mean?

How many times have you become frustrated over a concept that you can’t quite figure out?  Have you come home upset because you did not make the team or earn the award?  Have ever felt
dismayed because you had a struggle in a friendship?  Even though these things might be frustrating or disappointing at the time, it is important to recognize that being able to pick yourself up after a disappointment builds grit.  It builds resilience.  It builds a more effective future adult.

Why does this matter now?  Colleges and employers are reporting that recent graduates are less and less able to bounce back after disappointments and minor setbacks, thus setting them up for lack of success in college and the workforce.  But, how can we change the course of this pendulum?

Change your mindset.  Instead of quitting after a minor setback, look at how you might tackle your goal differently.  What steps can you change?  (Have you ever heard the saying “Keep doing what you’re doing, and you’ll keep getting what you’re getting”?)  Most importantly, don’t give up.  Notice how the “Power of Yet” changes your outlook.  Try telling yourself, “I don’t know how to do this problem….yet.”  “I am not getting this…yet.”  “I can’t do this…yet!”  You’d be surprised how changing your mindset can change your life.

I’m going to leave you with this famous quote from one of the best professional athletes of all time, Michael Jordan:  “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career.  I’ve lost almost 300 games.  Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed.  I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.  And that is why I succeed.”  Did you know that Michael Jordan did not make the high school varsity basketball team when he first tried out as a sophomore?  His understanding of the “Power of Yet” is what contributed to him making the varsity team his junior year and subsequently his highly successful career as a professional basketball player.  How can the “Power of Yet” help you to reach your goals?
LUNCH WITH THE PRINCIPAL
All middle school students are invited to join Principal Shaheen for an informal conversation during lunch on Thursday, September 21st in room 101.  This lunch time meeting is to give students a voice and in that an opportunity to talk about concerns, suggest new programs and ideas for the school, ask questions, or simply just check in.  (Please note that lunch is NOT provided.)
