Feb-17-MS-EBLAST-KINDNESS.jpg

February 21st kicks off the Great Kindness Challenge week for Middle School! “The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible.” The Challenge started in 2012 with 1,614 students in three schools and has grown to over 5,000,000 students in over 8,000 schools around the world who participated in last year’s (2016) Great Kindness Challenge Week!  Your goal is to complete the checklist of 50 Random Acts of Kindness, which all middle school students should have received during their humanities classes today, Friday, February 17th. Students who complete the checklist and turn it in by Friday, February 24th, will receive a special treat at the Quarter 3 Social.

In celebration of The Great Kindness Challenge, we will have a spirit week. (See attached Spirit week flyer.)

In addition, each Scholastic Lab class will participate in a poster decorating contest, the winners for which will receive a discounted admission of $3 at the Quarter 3 Social. Additionally, each student in each Scholastic Lab class will also create individual links devoted to his/her acts of kindness to add to a school-wide chain.  All of the Random Acts of Kindness links from each Scholastic Lab will be made into one big chain and displayed in the Middle School Courtyard to showcase all of the RAKs completed for the week.

Throughout the week, there will be many exciting lunchtime activities.  Radio Club will be playing music each day to celebrate the Great Kindness Challenge. Also at lunch during the week, there will be a kindness station available where students can create notes of kindness and complete their RAK checklist. Be sure to participate in the photo booth at lunch as well! To complete our Great Kindness Week, starting at lunch and going 15 minutes into 3rd block on Friday, there will be a wrap up assembly, where the winners of the poster decorating contest will be revealed and a new challenge will be announced.

One last reminder:  When on social media, be sure to use the hashtags:  #hustlekindness, #kindnesschallenge, and #horizonhonors to show your support and commitment to kindness.  Have fun and be kind!

ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL DAY SCHEDULE – TESTING – MARK YOUR CALENDAR
In an effort to support our students to perform at their best, Horizon Honors is implementing some changes to our test taking procedures.  More will be shared as we get closer to the testing window, but one change that will impact all students is an alternative schedule we will be following for four days.  This schedule will allow us to test our students only in the morning blocks when they are most ready to perform, minimize the impact on instructional days, prepare middle school age students for computer based testing, review curriculum without disrupting the regular course curriculum, and allow for technology to be available for both testing and classroom use.  Please read each day carefully to understand how your schedule will be affected.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Throughout the school year the Middle School science students have been studying, designing and building test mini-rockets.  This process has enabled them to analyze the data needed to build bottle rockets that they will launch at Pecos Park Thursday, February 23rd and Friday, February 24th.  You are  invited to the launching that will take place during your individual student’s science class.  Mrs. Wagner is also in search of parent volunteers.  Please contact her at pam.wagner@horizonclc.org if you are interested.

STUDENT SAFETY
In an ever changing world, the safety of your child is always at the forefront of our thoughts.  As a school, two additions have been made since January that will continue to support your child’s safety and school security.

The first addition is the installation of security cameras all around the interior and exterior of campus.  With these cameras the campus can be viewed in real time or from recorded footage.   The footage has already been useful in resolving a few issues.

The second addition is a classroom technology management tool called Go Guardian.   Working with Google Classroom, Go Guardian allows teachers to do all of the following and more:
Live Screen View – A view of each Chromebook screen to make sure every student is on task with a real-time look into all devices in the classroom.
Activity Timeline - A live timeline of the Chromebook showing exactly what each student is working on, complete with aggregate history reports and timely intervention opportunities.  This timeline is stored for a semester or more.
Tab Control - The ability to remotely open all tabs a student has open on the Chromebook, as well as close any tabs the student has open.
Google Platform View - The ability to view all Google Platform work such as documents, sheets, forms, etc. that a student might be working on to monitor actual work progress without the item being shared with the teacher.
Attention Mode – The ability to remotely darken all screens so students may not work.  This is helpful when it is time for the student to focus on the teacher, receive new directions, etc. without being distracted or tempted to continue to work on the Chromebook.
Customized Web Filtering – The teacher may limit the websites the student may access, so if a particular activity requires the student to only use three sites, the teacher may set up the Chromebooks to only access those three sites.

The teachers were so impressed with this product during our trial period that we have purchased a three year subscription to support safety and student learning in the classrooms.
TEXTS DURING EMERGENCIES
During an emergency situation, Horizon Honors will communicate the following ways:
  • email to parent and guardian emails addresses on file
  • automated phone call to parent and guardian phone numbers on file
  • text message to parent and guardian cell phones on file
In order to receive text messages, you must OPT IN. We will only use text messages in the event of an emergency. To receive emergency text messages, please send a message of YES to 67587.
REMINDER: NO ANIMALS ON CAMPUS
Our pets are members of our family! However, please remember that school policy only allows for service animals on campus. Please leave your pet family members at home. We appreciate your cooperation. Thank you!
LOOKING FOR CANCER SURVIVORS AND CAREGIVERS
Horizon Honors will be hosting our first ever Relay For Life Event on Friday, March 3, 2017. Relay For Life is a way for our whole Horizon Honors community to come together to bring hope to cancer survivors and their loved ones, honor cancer victims who have passed, and raise money to fight the disease.  Our school has been affected by this diseases numerous times, so it hits right at home. That is why we are eager to make this event the best it can be. In order for that to happen, we need cancer survivors to participate in the Survivor’s Lap at the event and caregivers for loved ones who have battled or are currently battling cancer to take their lap too! To sign up as an individual or to join a team, go to www.relayforlife.org/horizonhonorsaz.
If you or someone you know has or has had cancer, and would like to join us on this evening of hope, please contact our People Lead, Burke Wood at burke.wood@student.horizonclc.org. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!
