On Gratitude from Mrs. Broderick

It’s hard to believe it is already November with Thanksgiving just a few weeks away. With an opportunity to host all 10 grade level coffees over the past few weeks, I cannot help but feel even more connected and grateful to be leading such a school as Marymount. The most consistent theme I heard from new JK parents to graduating 8th grade parents was that our families are grateful and happy to be at our school. With a sincere focus on having happy and engaged learners fill our classrooms, our teachers continue to strive to be mission driven and support each and every child to be bright, confident, caring young people preparing for the amazing adventures ahead. What I love most, however, is the true gratitude I experience in every student I meet. Our students are grateful for their teachers and the ability to learn from each other and safely in their classrooms every day. Our community’s gratitude as a whole seems to be contagious and continues to create a culture of positivity and kindness. I think it is very important to note what research reveals about the benefits of gratitude and how it can positively affect us all both individually and collectively;

1. Gratitude opens the door to more relationships.
2. Gratitude improves physical health.
3. Gratitude improves psychological health.
4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression.
5. Grateful people sleep better.
6. Gratitude improves self-esteem.
7. Gratitude increases mental strength.

This year, we have so many things to count on our gratitude list. As we welcome our Grandparents and special friends on November 16th, we will be gathering as a school community to celebrate our Gratitude for our school, our families and our friends. In addition, I would like to encourage you to use the month of November to make a daily gratitude list with your student, adding a new opportunity to be grateful each day. It’s so easy to think about all of things we wish were different or we had more of, but what if we take time in the car on the way to and from school over the next few weeks to really notice what we are grateful for just the way it is today. As a life-long educator and Head of School, mom of a tween and teen, wife, daughter, sister and friend, I know I can look at the list above and always improve upon what I can be grateful for. I will start my list with you today and if you are following along on social media over the next few weeks, look for my daily gratitude list.

Today, #1 on my list is that I am grateful for you-Marymount. Thank you, what an honor and privilege it is to know you and I look forward to many more bright, confident, caring and gratitude-filled days ahead.
