Labor Beat Fund Appeal: Prepare for 2017

Opener-Logo-Burst-s.jpg

Our goal: $7,000
Labor Beat is launching its fund drive to prepare for 2017, which will be another year of challenges for working class media. We thank our supporters who helped us reach our target last year, and hope you will support us again, and tell your friends about our work. For new supporters, If you watch and appreciate our videos, say "thank you" with a donation. Rising operating costs (rent, equipment maintenance, fees, postal and office, physical media, travel and parking) are only a few of our expenses. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit, EIN: 36-3368030.

Labor Beat has produced over 750 shows since 1986 for our regular series on CAN TV Channel 19 in Chicago. Our series is also on cable-tv and broadcast in five other cities in the U.S., available to a potential viewership of 2 million. And add to that tens of thousands of viewers on YouTube and laborbeat.org from India to Brazil to Côte d’Ivoire.

In 2015-16 we covered the fight for public schools, and much more (outlined below). You can view all shows at laborbeat.org using pull down playlist in upper left of video window.

International: German subtitles by labournet.tv of our one-day Chicago teachers strike video (photo); exclusive coverage of new leftist leader of UK’s Labour Party, Jeremy Corby, in earlier visits to U.S.; coup in Brazil, and a report back by a Chicago bus driver on an international labor conference in São Paulo.

Workers producing/moving commodities: It’s where surplus value is created. International protest by slave-wage fast food workers at McD headquarters in Oak Brook; Old Country Buffet closes without warning; NABISCO runs away to Mexico; Chicago Transit Authority victimizes militant shop steward; organizing victory at SEARS; abuse of railroad working conditions threatens communities, environment, and employees (photo).

Non-corporate television: Defending public access television means supporting union organizing election at Chicago Access Network TV, and winning a first contract (photo). We tell the story of NABET/CWA Local 41's victory. CAN TV Channel 19 is where Labor Beat is cablecast, 9:30 pm Thursdays and 4:30 pm Fridays. See our website for times and channels in other U.S. cities.

Converging battlefronts: United front against racist cuts in public education, citywide outrage against police killings (photo), the rising tide to depose Chicago's Mayor Emanuel. Old forms of supervision begin to break down as the Political Machine scrambles on several fronts to re-establish control.
