sFrom Ray

Hello Folks,

All prayers, spoken and silent, reflect our relationship with God and one another. Last Sunday's prayers of joy and concerns touched me as they always do - in their sacredness and soulfulness.

One prayer on Sunday powerfully reminded us of the courage and danger those who protect us live with every day. A member of our congregation, who is also a member of the NYPD, lifted up prayers for Officer Miosotis Familia, who was shot and killed last week as she sat in her patrol car. It was a senseless act of "madness" beyond words. Our friend's prayer for Officer Familia included requests to remember all those who serve us and the risks they and their families endure every moment they are on the job. Our member then closed his petition with a request for prayers for the individual whose insanity led him to commit this horrible act.

Think about that for a moment, if you will.

I have thought about it a lot since Sunday and am awed by and grateful for such love and faith, that even when we are in our deepest sorrow, we can consider the person who perpetrated the tragedy. This is who we are and strive always to be.

As Officer Familia was laid to her rest today, as she entered into the time of her eternal reward I found myself in the same place I did on Sunday. A place that moved me to ask Sean not to play the Offertory Hymn and, instead, allow us to sit in silence. A time to sit in God's presence; to seek the Joy that exceeds all sorrow. Quietly. I am still seeking...still saddened.

If you can, please find some time and silence to remember these prayers and others; to remember how we are called beyond our anger and resentments and fear - to love. If you can, take a moment to let someone know how much you love them - maybe even forgive them, too. Pray for the heart and the courage to love those we forgive, regardless of their response. To love those who have wronged us, regardless of the wrong.

And remember, this is not easy...but so?

My prayers and arms around you all,

Love,

Ray
