Recap of Our June Meeting

This Old Tech Writer: DIY Tricks to Stay Marketable
presented by "vintage wonderful" Karen Mulholland

A summary of the STC TC meeting on June 13, 2017 at the Wilder Foundation in Saint Paul, Minnesota, provided by Johanna Schels, STC TC Secretary

Does ageism exist? Are experienced, mature professional writers being discriminated because of their age? According to Karen Mulholland, ageism in the professional world of technical communication is real. Writers need to be prepared to “make assumptions irrelevant” by demonstrating that their decades-long experience counts when strategic, long-term, practical thinking is what the employer needs.

Karen Mulholland uses a smart analogy; she compares the strategy for preparing a job search to the strategy of selling a home.

Her advice:

Repair: We all go through ups and downs in life. Learn to achieve a healthy emotional state, despite these life challenges.
Renovate: It’s important to keep up with digital trends. Inventory your skills and see how they compare with skills employers want nowadays.
Refresh: Find the “wonderful and fabulous” in you, and then express it. Be authentically you!

Karen Mulholland, the “vintage wonderful” senior technical writer wins over her audience with a show of healthy self-confidence, a “vintage wonderful” style, and an exceptional sense of humor.
