Greetings from Pastor Ray

Dear Friends,

We are now more than a week into spring! Signs of new life are all around us and the snow and ice and sleet are behind us, please, please, please! Still, there will come a time when the first snowfall will be welcome…but not at least for another 250 days or so! And, that is just fine with me; maybe with you! In the meantime….

Each week, as I write these notes, I think of everyone who makes it possible for this congregation to thrive as it does, with kindness and energy that reflects God’s love in so many ways. To all of you, thank you! Thank you in chronos and kairos!

As for this coming Sunday…

Worship begins at 10:00 AM and our reading will be Psalm 130, “A Pilgrim Song.” It is offered below from The Message. I hope you will find this a provocative text to consider, as we move more deeply into this Season of Lent.

"Help, God—the bottom has fallen out of my life!
God, hear my cry for help!
Listen hard! Open your ears!
Listen to my cries for mercy.

"If you, God, kept records on wrongdoings,
    who would stand a chance?
As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit,
    and that’s why you’re worshiped.

"I pray to God—my life a prayer—
and wait for what God will say and do.
My life’s on the line before God, my God,
    waiting and watching till morning,
    waiting and watching till morning.

"O Israel, wait and watch for God—
    with God’s arrival comes love,
with God’s arrival comes generous redemption.
No doubt about it—God will redeem Israel,
buy back Israel from its captivity to sin."

Following worship on Sunday, I also hope that you will be able to join us for our first Interfaith forum with Sister Sanaa Nadim, Muslim Chaplain from Stony Brook University. This forum marks the beginning of a broader effort to better understand and minister with one another in serving all those God calls us to love. Our many thanks for Mike Jayne and Robert Pierce who helped in contacting Sister Sanaa, making arrangements for her to be with us. Thanks, too, to the Social Action Committee for its commitment and encouragement in planning this day. Sister Sanaa is a highly respected leader of the Long Island Interfaith community, and we are fortunate to have her in our midst.  Please be sure to join us.

Speaking of our faith-based Social Action Committee, part of our goal has been to provide resources that make it possible for the youngest and most senior among us; the busiest and il dolce far niente; and everyone in between - to engage their hearts and voices in advocacy and activism at their own pace. A second goal has been to create opportunities for groups to develop around specific interests in the social justice area. To do these things and more, we now publish a second weekly newsletter on Fridays called “Justice Chimes.” Please offer your feedback, ideas, gatherings and activities and anything you would like to share by sending  announcements or notices to news@justicechimes.org. And, if you need to get something to us quickly or in case of an emergency - please call or text me at 631-827-8611.

As a reminder, you can catch up on eChimes or JusticeChimes at www.sayvilleucc.org or www.facebook.com/sayvilleucc. We welcome your “Likes” on Facebook as well as your comments and reviews!

I hope you find time, now and then, to pause and feel the presence of God and God's love (same thing, I think!) in your life and those around you, just as I do when we gather. And, when you are so moved, I hope you will let someone know just how much you love them…there is a good chance they are waiting and watching for your touch and those words.

Love to you,
Ray

Meditation Times…

We are working on a schedule for the sanctuary to be open during the week, so that it can be a place for meditation, prayer or just to sit quietly in the welcoming of the space. If you are in the area and wish to stop in, please do so! If it happens to be closed, come on over to the office and we will open the doors!
